What is Kombucha?
Kombucha is an ancient raw fermented tea beverage, made by adding a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast (SCOBY) to a solution of tea and sugar.
During the fermentation process, the cultures metabolize the sugar and tea components resulting in a naturally carbonated beverage, with a slightly sweet-tart flavour, full of healthy components like B vitamins, organic acids, antioxidants, and trace amounts of alcohol. The product is unpasteurised (can often be referred to as “raw”), this ensures that the healthy yeast and bacteria remain in the bottled product.
Great source of natural compounds essential for good gut health
Kombucha is a type of tea that has been fermented. This makes it a good source of organic acids and other natural compounds that are produced from the natural fermentation process and known to provide a healthy environment for the gut.
Our Kombucha is based on blends of the South African Rooibos Tea, brewed locally in County Antrim (Northern Ireland), providing a unique tasting beverage with health benefits. This family recipe was handed down through several generations from the Western/Northern Cape region of South Africa.
Nua originated not only from the desire to have a great tasting and refreshing drink, but equally important to have great functional properties derived from the selected ingredients. The health benefits, largely associated with the anti-oxidants found in Rooibos are well documented and provided an obvious choice for the Nua team and its goal of optimum health. Rooibos is a naturally caffeine free product.
Nua Kombucha is fermented in small batches using traditional methods which we believe results in an authentic product, with a great taste with added functionality provided by the natural products of fermentation.
Kombucha has been used for thousands of years in Asia and Russia. Similar to the other Fermented foods, the bacteria in Kombucha is thought to support gut health. Gut health is closely linked with mental health as our “second brain.” The products of the fermentation are also thought to have additional health benefits, ranging from the organic acids (gut repair) to energising (B Vitamins).
